Approaching Hurricane tvt

8/26/2021
Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin would like to make Lake Houston Area residents aware that Houston Public Works, Coastal Water Authority, and San Jacinto River Authority are working together closely and monitoring the tropical system approaching the Gulf of Mexico this weekend and early next week. In the coming days, there may be a need to enact our storm management lake lowering protocols and would like residents to make sure they are prepared in advance. Property owners should make arrangements now to secure boats and other items along the shoreline for a potential lowering of Lake Houston.
It is too early to tell what, if any, impacts our area will get from the existing system in the Gulf of Mexico (99L) according to National Weather Service Houston-Galveston. If a verified storm develops, Houston Public Works will adhere to our standard lake lowering procedure which is to lower Lake Houston to 41.5 ft., if three inches of rainfall is predicted for our region.
Lake Houston is currently at 42.36 ft, normal pool is 42.4 ft. Lake Houston lake levels may be monitored by visiting www.coastalwaterauthority.org. Lake Conroe is currently 200.27 ft, which is nearly one foot lower than their normal pool of 201 ft. Lake Conroe lake levels can be monitored by visiting www.sjra.net.
If these storms develop, Houston Public Works is preparing for the potential release of possibly 12 inches, which would lower the lake to 41.5 feet. Property owners should make arrangements now to secure boats and other items along the shoreline for a potential lowering of Lake Houston.
Please remember just having enough supplies to make it through a hurricane isnt enough. Have enough non-perishable food, water, and medicine to last each person in your family for a MINIMUM of three days. Also make sure you have extra cash, a battery-powered radio, flashlights, and a portable crank or solar-powered USB charger to charge your cell phone.
Please utilize these resources to make sure you and your family are prepared and have signed up to receive alerts from AlertHouston.
